Oops, I realized too late that my retagging efforts (trying to shore up the geometric-group-theory tag) showed up as bumping about 5 zillion posts on the front page of MathOverflow. I don't suppose there is any way to do such things without causing that effect?

No, there is no way withoutout bumping it in the 'active' view (and thus default frontpage). On the good side tag-edits do not make the question reappear in 'hot'. There is one exception: if a tag in total should be changed (say rename it, merge it into another,...) then moderators can do this.

The standard guideline is: three edits of old questions per day (and user).

(Perhaps I should add that personally I quite appreciate efforts to improve the tagging, and would rather like to see more of it happening.)

OK, I like the "three edit" guideline, thanks.
